Brief history of QRP

That the purposes and tasks of our QRP-expedition were more clear, I want to stop on a brief history of world QRP.

In those already far for us times of 20 years, of initial ether mastering of the radio amateurs, the majority of amateur radios suited for modern determination QRP (input power to an output stage 5 watts in CW mode). It was defined by that time of valves used for receivers and transmitters constructing, were rare and expensive. A lot of valves, accessible to the radio amateurs, could not provide a large output power. Nevertheless, the radio amateurs using transmitters with an output power equal 1-10 watts, worked thus on the "nanous" radio sets with all world. The "know-how" of valves were gradually improved. The powerful valves for output stages of transmitters became all more cheaply and accessible, and the radio amateurs have begun to increase an output power of the radio sets.

Later, the omnipresent propagation of an alternating-current mains in apartment houses has allowed to provide practically any reasonable output power on an exit of an amateur radio. Earlier output power of an amateur radio often was restricted to power of used battery or accumulators powers.

The hobby for hunting for "DX" caused the radio amateurs permanently to increase the power, to use more effective antennas. To the beginning of the second world war the majority of amateur stations already worked power, which already in any way could not be refered to QRP. After the termination of the second world war in hand of the radio amateurs of the European countries and USA the written-off military instrumentation has got. The perfect high-sensitive military receivers, powerful transmitters have allowed cardinally to change operation of the radio amateurs in ether. The holding of DX - communications became usual matter. It has made to other radio amateurs to increase an output power of the transmitters and to augment responsivity of receivers. But, for the first time increasing of transmitted powers has appeared much more easy, than improvement of parameters of receivers and usage of effective antennas. Therefore in ether a lot of amateur stations has appeared which was operating with large power but had simple regenerative receivers and simple substitute antenna.

This period of ham radio development - at once after the second world war - (1945-1950) is historically very interesting. The successful development of tube engineering would seem gave boundless possibilities for creation of radio sets of any power and responsivity even to the radio amateurs.

But the history has made the next turn. Since a middle 1950 years, steel accessible to the radio amateurs recently struck out transistors.

The enthusiasts of semiconductor engineering in those times have begun to construct the transistorized transmitters. It is interesting to note, that in this case initial development of transistor engineering reminded a development of tube engineering. Originally constructed semiconductor crystal-controlled frequency transmitters. Thus, in accordance with development of semiconductor engineering (hardware) and most transistor circuitry (software) of a construction of amateur semiconductor radio sets more and more became complicated. Gradually have begun to occur transmitters with a VFO ( Variable Frequency oscillator ), which had high (for the radio amateurs conditions ) parameters. The radio amateurs have begun to undertake creation of transistor transceivers. The successful development of semiconductor engineering has allowed to establish already in those times transistors of small and average power operating on frequencies up to 7 MHz, i.e. has appeared the possibility to establish transmitters for amateur ranges 1,8; 3,5; 7 MHz. The power of the first transistor transmitters was small - from several milliwatts up to several hundreds milliwatt. Despite of this a little as contrasted to with that the valves, power ensured, the radio amateurs attempted to work on them in ether. Here again there was a miracle! Using even the so small powers, radio amateurs managed conducting QSO's on large distances!

It is possible to name this time - middle of 50 - beginning 60 years as time of revival of QRP-driving. In that time the start-up of space vehicles began, on which low-power HF - VHF transmitters were used, and which in too time were audible on large distances. The development of space engineering has reduced in a further development of quality of semiconductor production and semiconductor circuitry. It has allowed to construct amateur transmitters having in high parameters on semiconductor elements. In that time began to go into a radioamateur slang and word collocation QRP- operation by low power. Before this time the expression "QRP" in the value, as we perceive it now, was used seldom. At the end of 50 - beginning 60 years the activity of the sun has allowed to conduct DX - QSO on 14-28 MHz, using small powers, that called interest to QRP-transistorized transmitters. Within 60 years the development of semiconductor engineering has allowed to establish to following peak of solar activity, which was at the end of 60 - beginning 70 years quite decent transistor QRP- gear. Creation of the first local QRP-clubs by then falls which have integrated the fans to work of low power.

Then also were defined, what power to consider as QRP. It is 5 watts in a condition CW and 10 watts in condition SSB. Worldwide have begun to be organized national QRP-clubs - at first it were of QRP-section at other clubs, such as QRP-section in DL-AGCW (Germanium), SCAG-CW (Scandinavia). Such large QRP-clubs as ARCI (USA), G-QRP-C (England) were subsequently organized. Now in the World exists more than 200 QRP clubs in the different countries. Already it is impossible to know their exact amount. Many of QRP clubs conduct competitions, days of activity its operation in ether.

Such QRP - competitions cannot be named as competitions in that comprehension, what in it is put with other radio amateurs. It is meeting in ether of the friends on QRP hobby, inspection of possibilities of QRP-operation and trial self-made QRP gear.

Many of leading firms are manufactured of a radio-transmitting equipment responded to QRP hobby. The broad spectrum QRP transceivers, kits for their manufacture are emitted. Now each radio amateur has a possibility or to buy off-the shelf QRP transceiver or to make it from a kit. It even more magnifies QRP driving, and enables many radio amateurs to connect to it.
